In order to better serve diverse global audiences and foster the sustainability of the journalism industry, there is a pressing need to diversify the storytellers shaping our narratives. This dynamic panel will feature women leaders in newsrooms who are actively reshaping paradigms, introducing fresh perspectives to editorial decisions, and amplifying bold new voices in discussions on our most pressing challenges.
Meet the trailblazers:
Cristi Hegranes, Global Press. Cristi's organization trains and employs local women journalists in some of the world's least-covered places. By prioritizing proximity, access, and local knowledge, Global Press tells stories that not only serve local communities but also resonate with a global audience.
Yukari Kane, Prison Journalism Project. Yukari is dedicated to shifting the narrative on the criminal justice system. The Prison Journalism Project trains incarcerated writers, allowing them to tell the stories of what's happening inside their own communities, thereby elevating the voices of those most impacted by the system.
Akoto Ofori-Atta, Capital B. Akoto's organisation centers Black voices and collaborates closely with the communities it serves. It seeks to counteract misinformation, disinformation, and low-quality news by providing a high-context antidote to the issues clouding our information pipelines.
These three newsroom pioneers are collectively changing the storyteller and rewriting the narrative to produce news that informs and engages communities. Moderated by Jennifer Humke, Senior Program Officer in Journalism and Media at the MacArthur Foundation, this panel will reflect on the opportunities and challenges of building newsrooms that prioritize inclusion and take editorial direction from the communities they serve.

Sala della Vaccara
La Sala della Vaccara si trova nel lato nord del Palazzo dei Priori, nell’area ove sorgeva l'antica chiesa di San Severo. Fu realizzata attorno al 1339 ed è stata sede del primo archivio comunale. La sala si presenta con volte a crociera e costolature e al suo interno rimangono brani di affreschi raffiguranti santi protettori dei traffici commerciali e delle attività artigianali. Sulla parete di fondo è collocato un distacco di affresco raffigurante la Madonna con Bambino e Santi di Tiberio di Assisi (Scuola umbra del XV Sec.).

Cristi Hegranes is the CEO and publisher of Global Press, an award-winning organization that produces ethical, accurate global news. She founded Global Press in 2006 with a vision to create a new model for international journalism that prioritizes dignity, diversity, and transparency. With over 17 years of experience in the media industry, Cristi has developed a unique set of competencies that enable her to lead the business and editorial sides of Global Press. She is an expert in local journalist security, and she created the industry-leading Global Press Duty of Care program to provide for the physical, emotional, digital, and legal security of journalists. She is also the lead author of the Global Press Style Guide, which promotes greater precision and dignity in global journalism. Jennifer Humke
Jennifer Humke is Senior Program Officer in Journalism and Media at the MacArthur Foundation. Jennifer focuses primarily on grantmaking in participatory civic media. She targets support for work that encourages and trains people, particularly young people and those from historically marginalized communities, to use new media tools, platforms, and practices to contribute to public dialogue and help shape culture and policy. Prior to joining the Journalism & Media team in late 2015, she was a Program Officer for MacArthur’s Digital Media and Learning program, a 10-year, $200 million initiative aimed at re-imagining learning for the digital age. Jennifer joined the Foundation in 2002 and served as Associate Director for Public Affairs before moving to the program team. Prior to her tenure with MacArthur, Jennifer spent three years with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, where she was responsible for media and public outreach for Museum exhibits, events, and fundraising campaigns. Yukari Kane
Yukari Iwatani Kane is a journalist with nearly 20 years of experience, writing mostly about business and technology but also health, food, travel and anything else where she sees a story. The last reporter at the Wall Street Journal to cover Apple under Steve Jobs, Yukari led much of the coverage during this time, including the news about Jobs’s liver transplant. Her work on the beat led to her book Haunted Empire: Apple After Steve Jobs, published by Harper Business and translated into seven languages. She teaches at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. In 2019 Yukari co-founded the Prison Journalism Project (PJP) as a way to empower the men and women who live behind bars through storytelling and journalism. PJP’s goal is to elevate their voices, so they can be a part of the national conversations about criminal justice.
Akoto Ofori-Atta
Akoto Ofori-Atta is co-founder and Chief Audience Officer of Capital B, a nonprofit local and national news organization serving Black Americans, set to launch this fall. Most recently, she was Managing Editor at The Trace, where she was responsible for partnerships, special projects, and editorial operations. As a founding editor, Akoto helped secure more than 170 local and national editorial partners for The Trace’s features and investigations. Previously, she held the position of Associate Editor and Social Media Manager at The Root and as a Senior Editor at Essence Magazine. In 2015, she completed a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University, where she focused on issues surrounding diversity and the Black press. She was selected as a 2019-2020 Emerging Leader for the Institute of Nonprofit News.
