La pace di Augusto «Quando tornai a Roma dalla Gallia e dalla Spagna, sotto il consolato di Tiberio Nerone e Publio Quintilio [9 d.C.], portate felicemente a termine le imprese in quelle province, il senato decretò che si dovesse consacrare un'ara alla Pace augustea nel Campo Marzio e ordinò che in essa i magistrati, i sacerdoti e le vergini vestali celebrassero ogni anno un sacrificio». Nelle Res Gestae, il resoconto delle sue imprese civili e militari, Augusto ricordò con queste parole il tema che più caratterizzò, nella percezione dei contemporanei e dei posteri, l’epoca che da lui prese il nome. Celebrato per le vittorie nelle guerre civili e in quelle esterne, egli fu celebrato soprattutto come il pacificatore universale che aveva dato tranquillità e benessere all’ecumene. Andrea Giardina ha insegnato Storia romana alla Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.
