Che cosa porta alla fine di una guerra: le vittorie sui campi di battaglia? La diplomazia (nelle ambasciate e nei salotti)? Le lotte pacifiste? O, più semplicemente, il caso? Siamo soliti osservare guerra e pace sotto lenti diverse: la guerra come destino ineluttabile; la pace, invece, come compito. Perfino il pensiero utopico non ha rinunciato alla guerra: e così società immaginarie, inventate a tavolino con un tratto di penna, vedono risorgere (contro ogni logica apparente) i conflitti armati. Sembra insomma che, da secoli, riteniamo la guerra inevitabile: eppure ogni sua ricomparsa – l’ultima volta tre anni fa – ci lascia stupefatti, sotto shock. Come interpretare questo nostro insieme, in apparenza paradossale, di ingenuità e fatalismo? Uno storico militare risponde alle sollecitazioni di una storica dell’utopia, provando a delineare come sia cambiato, nel tempo, il nostro approccio alla guerra e alla pace.
