Coppe, cosmetici e quantum dot - I nanocristalli dagli antichi romani al Nobel 2023
Oggi i nanocristalli permettono di manipolare energia e materia: assorbendo ed emettendo luce in modo controllato, come succede in creme solari e schermi televisivi, ma anche controllando reazioni chimiche, per esempio nella catalisi di processi industriali e nel trattamento di inquinanti. In più, la medicina moderna ne sfrutta le minuscole dimensioni per creare traccianti, veicolare farmaci e sviluppare terapie mirate. Eppure, nanoparticelle di poche migliaia di atomi erano già usate dagli antichi romani e poi dagli arabi in epoca medievale per produrre vetri e smalti colorati, nonché cosmetici e tinture. In questa conferenza scopriremo come le dimensioni minuscole conferiscano ai nanocristalli le loro speciali proprietà e ripercorreremo insieme la storia della nanochimica, dall’antichità ai quantum dot protagonisti del premio Nobel per la Chimica 2023.
