Il sistema dei parchi nazionali statunitensi comprende oltre sessanta aree protette ed è nato anche grazie alla appassionata lotta dell'ingegnere di origine scozzese John Muir, che con i suoi scritti e le sue sognanti descrizioni della wilderness influenzò la scienza ambientalista contemporanea. Marco Sioli, nel suo In difesa della natura selvaggia, ha analizzato la figura di Muir ponendo in relazione il suo ecologismo profondo, contrario a qualsiasi commercializzazione della natura, con gli sviluppi più recenti del pensiero eco-anarchico e i movimenti ambientalisti radicali.
