Grazie alla più completa ricostruzione effettuata finora dei suoi cromosomi, è stata ricostruita con grande dettaglio la storia genetica del caffè Arabica, la specie responsabile di oltre il 60% della produzione globale di caffè. Il risultato, pubblicato a febbraio 2024 sulla rivista Nature Communications, arriva dal gruppo internazionale guidato dall’azienda biotecnologica IGA Technology Services e dall’Istituto di Genomica Applicata di Udine, con l’importante contributo dell’Università di Udine, dell’Università di Verona e delle aziende illycaffè di Trieste e Lavazza Group di Torino. Le informazioni ottenute potrebbero aiutare a sviluppare nuove varietà di caffè più resistenti alle malattie o con aromi diversi.
