Tutti quei paesaggi che amiamo per la loro bellezza, per il loro insostituibile valore ecologico-ambientale, non sono "natura originaria" bensì, per lo più, "natura trasformata" in virtù di interventi progettati per rendere possibile l'esistenza umana nel mondo. Il fiume ne è un esempio molto evidente: gli argini, le zone golenali, i canali, le opere di presa, le strade, i ponti, i sentieri, le piantate per la produzione agricola e forestale evidenziano come i diversi habitat che ogni corso d'acqua alimenta sono il risultato in continua mutazione dell'interazione tra natura, tecnica e cultura. Il volume inaugura la collana Drawing Landscapes, nata in collaborazione con il Politecnico di Milano, e raccoglierà monografie su opere di architettura, ciascuna dedicata a un progetto emblematico che interviene su un elemento primario del paesaggio.
