In 2022, the trailblazing newsroom leader Richard Tofel opened up a passionate debate in the US when he questioned the value of journalism intermediaries – organisations which build networks, offer shared resources, assemble benchmarking data or provide coaching for independent news organisations, but do not actually produce journalism. Tofel suggested that too much philanthropic funding was going to these intermediary organisations rather than to news providers themselves.
Three years later, does Tofel stand by his original concerns? Or have the journalism intermediaries, not only in the US but around the world, proved that they add value to the news ecosystem?

Il Palazzo dei Priori, o comunale, è uno dei migliori esempi d'Italia di palazzo pubblico dell'età comunale. Sorge nella centrale Piazza IV Novembre a Perugia, in Umbria. Si estende lungo Corso Vannucci fino a via Boncambi. È ancora oggi sede di parte del Municipio e, al terzo piano, della Galleria nazionale dell'Umbria. Deve il suo nome ai Priori, la massima autorità politica al governo della città in epoca medievale.

Sarah Alvarez is the founder and editor-at-large of Outlier Media, a Detroit-based service journalism organization identifying and filling information, accountability and connection gaps in Detroit. The newsroom identifies, reports, and delivers valuable information to equip Detroiters to hold people and systems accountable for harm and to contribute to a thriving community. Outlier’s core product is an SMS service that texts critical info to residents and connects them directly with reporters. Her methodologies are now being used by journalism organizations across the world. Before founding Outlier Media in 2015 as a JSK Fellow at Stanford University, she worked in civil rights law, nonprofit management, and public radio.

Vera Penêda is director of programmes and impact at the European Journalism Centre. She has led multinational teams at newspapers, television networks and NGOs in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
