Ci fu un tempo in cui Roma non esisteva ancora. O meglio, la sua storia classica, le sue vestigia, la sua trama antica, erano state dimenticate. Tra il Trecento e Quattrocento, l'interesse nuovo per la classicità portò eruditi e letterati sulla strada di quel passato, non solo attraverso il recupero di libri dimenticati ma anche e soprattutto grazie a un nuovo sguardo sulla città. La riscoperta dell'antico portò umanisti come Flavio Biondo o Ciriaco d'Ancona a indagare tra i libri, camminare e scavare per le strade di una città abbandonata e impoverita, ricostruendo pietra dopo pietra la trama ormai perduta della Roma antica. Questa è la loro storia.
