Non esisteva, finora, una biografia completa e attendibile di Ludovico Maria Sforza, l’erede della dinastia viscontea e sforzesca che nel 1494 diventò per privilegio imperiale il settimo duca di Milano. Come si spiega questa lacuna, che non rende giustizia al periodo ducale della storia milanese e lombarda? Una ragione può essere la cattiva fama dello Sforza e la sua responsabilità nell’aver provocato le guerre d’Italia e la fine della sua dinastia. Forse ha pesato una certa presunzione e spigolosità del personaggio (già lo notava Francesco Guicciardini), giacché Ludovico si riteneva capace di condurre il suo gioco manipolando la volontà altrui, senza fare i conti con la grande potenza militare e politica della monarchia di Carlo VIII e Luigi XII. Il testo segue le vicende di Ludovico Maria fin dalla sua educazione infantile, poi da giovane cadetto degli Sforza, tracciando inoltre le tappe di una scalata al potere condotta con determinazione e con una certa spregiudicatezza politica.
