The media funding space is still fairly new terrain for many foundations; only a few foundations are explicitly organized to support journalism. In reality, the majority of funders supporting media and journalism initiatives are doing so in ways that align with existing program portfolios, rather than through a dedicated portfolio. Over the years, we’ve heard countless funders who support media and journalism say that they don’t actually consider themselves media funders. At the same time, philanthropic support for this work is continuing its upward trajectory, signaling that more foundations are recognizing the critical role of media and journalism in addressing societal issues.
This session unpacks how philanthropy is approaching journalism funding, not as a standalone priority, but as an essential tool for achieving broader programmatic goals. We’ll explore how these funding strategies are shaping the journalism landscape. For journalists, this conversation sheds light on the evolving relationship between media and philanthropy, offering insights into how these dynamics influence the resources available to support impactful reporting.

Kayce Ataiyero
Kayce Ataiyero is the Chief External Affairs Officer at the Joyce Foundation, where she oversees the Foundation's strategic communications, the Journalism Program and the Lend A Hand community grants fund. She is also a member of the Foundation's leadership team. Kayce has extensive experience in communications, journalism and politics. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2018, she served as director of external affairs for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, where she led communications and community engagement. She has also led communications for U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly, the Illinois Governor’s Office and the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. As an award-winning journalist, Kayce previously worked as a staff writer for the Chicago Tribune, The Raleigh News and Observer, Philadelphia Inquirer and Washington Post. Kayce has a degree in journalism from the University of Maryland College Park. She is board chair of Media Impact Funders, a national organization that advances the work of a broad range of funders committed to supporting media in the public interest. She also serves on the board of Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, an organization committed to the unfinished business of our nation’s civil rights movement. She is a Leadership Greater Chicago Daniel Burnham Fellow, was named a Top 10 Empowering Women Leaders to Follow by CIO Views Magazine, a Chicago Titan 100, one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of Illinois by Women We Admire, a Notable Black Leader and Executive by Crain’s Chicago Business and one of Chicago’s most influential Black leaders by The Chicago Tribune. She also at one time was general manager of the Chicago Steam, a minor-league basketball team.
Sam Gill
Sam Gill is the president and CEO of the Doris Duke Foundation (DDF), a New York-headquartered, national philanthropic organization that operates five national grantmaking programs—in the performing arts, the environment, medical research, child and family well-being, and mutual understanding between communities—as well as Duke Farms and Shangri La, two centers that serve the public directly. Prior to joining DDF, Gill was senior vice president and chief program officer at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, where he oversaw more than $100 million in annual grantmaking across the foundation’s programs, in addition to managing Knight’s research and assessment portfolio and its grants administration function.
