The media is dependent on people being willing to share their stories. Without the voices of victims of abuses of power, public-interest journalism would be flat, limited to data points to show the human cost, unable to engender empathy. But asking people who have experienced trauma, are from marginalized communities or otherwise ill-equipped to handle media scrutiny, to tell us their story in all its “colour” can also be retraumatising and extractive. What are some of the ethical issues journalists should be mindful of when reporting on vulnerable communities? How can we navigate the needs of our reporting and the needs of those we are reported on? Moderated by Meera Senthilingam Sponsored by CNN As Equals.
