Annika Joeres spent dozens of days for German national weekly Die Zeit in the Avignon (France) courtroom to report on one of the biggest rape trials in history. The reports and essays were among the most widely read of the year and the international interest was huge. This trial destroyed a myth: the myth that it is mostly foreigners and possibly immigrant men who endanger women. In reality, the majority of sex offenders are relatives, work colleagues or even their own partners, as was the case with Gisèle Pelicot. In this interview, Annika will talk about how we manage to sit at arm's length from the perpetrators and still report objectively. And how we can report appropriately on everyday sexual violence and survive it as journalists.
