The fundraising limbo: why are there no grants in the South of Europe?

In the last few years, with the eruption of wars within Europe and the intensification of fascism, funding for journalism shifted its focus to the geographies most affected by it, in Eastern Europe and even outside of the continent. As we’ve witnessed foundations shutting down their programs or moving away their grant focus, we’ve also seen other programs being formed. What do they have in common? Most of them focus on transnational collaborations and leave an important part of national European independent journalism out of the equation: the South.
Newsrooms from Southern Europe have long realised they live in a fundraising limbo — most of them are not “rich” enough to have national journalism grant givers, and are also not “poor” enough to be considered in the map of countries in need for money. In this panel discussion, we’re collectively thinking how to structurally solve this dilemma and find ways to mutually support our journalism from the South.
