The Publix Building in Berlin provides top-quality infrastructure for journalism and civil society work. We bring together a network of people who are working on vital questions facing the future of the news media and democracy. Publix is more than just another building. Created by the Schöpflin Foundation, it is an inspiration for people from all over Europe to work on the future. The building hosts events focused on sharing knowledge and community building. Furthermore, Publix is a workshop for innovation through infrastructure, grants, funding, networking and education.
Schöpflin Foundation's idea of impact investment into real estate to enhance the development of a democratic society through journalism and sharing knowledge can be repeated all over the world. We would like to share our ideas and experiences with you.

Maria Exner
Maria Exner studied Journalism in Munich. She trained as a journalist in Berlin and worked as a reporter for the WELT Group. After completing her Masters in Sociology at the London School of Economics, she became ZEIT ONLINE's culture editor in 2011. From 2014 to 2020 she was deputy editor-in-chief of ZEIT ONLINE, developing magazine journalism and innovative digital projects for ZEIT ONLINE and DIE ZEIT. In 2021, Exner became editor-in-chief of ZEITmagazin. Since 2022 she has been the founding director of Publix, a new Berlin-based cultural institution and organization with the aim of strengthening independent and non-profit media and critical discourse. In 2023, she was a Thomas Mann Fellow in Los Angeles, studying the interdependencies between journalism, technology, and democracy. She has received numerous awards for her work on journalism and polarization.
Tim Gobel
Tim Göbel became Executive Director of the Schöpflin Foundation in 2016. As a grantmaking foundation operating throughout Europe, Schöpflin enables experiments through social risk capital and strengthens their dissemination in civil society. The Foundation supports civil society organisations in their growth - as a complement and counterweight to public and private sector actors. Tim studied economics and was then a founding member of the team that set up the private interdisciplinary Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, serving as its Vice President from 2008 through 2016. Tim Göbel is a member of the supervisory board at Finanzwende e. V. and a member of the advisory board at ProjectTogether. Over the past five years, as the Executive Director of Schöpflin, he has also played a key role in developing Publix, a House for Journalism and the Public in Berlin.
David Schraven
David Schraven leads the non-profit investigative newsroom CORRECTIV as Publisher. After spending time at taz and Süddeutsche Zeitung, he worked as a freelance journalist in the business and North Rhine-Westphalia departments of the Welt-group. While working as a guest journalist for Time Magazine, David was in New York on September 11th when the towers fell. He also founded the political blog Ruhrbarone. Between 2010 and 2014 David was in charge of the research department at the Content Desk of Funke-Mediengruppe (WAZ/NRZ/WR/WP). David received the Wächterpreis der Tagespresse award for his investigation of the PFT-poison scandal at the Ruhr. He was awarded the Research Prize of the Swiss Wolfgang-Fichtner-Foundation for his work on fraud allegations against former state secretary Zülfiye Kaykin.
