Maria Rosa Cutrufelli fa rivivere in questo romanzo le storie delle ragazze approdate a New York agli inizi del secolo scorso, con affetto e un po’ di nostalgia per gli anni 1910-11: dure lotte sindacali ed entusiasmo delle giovani donne nella ricerca di pane e rose, lavoro, amori, giustizia e libertà. Le operaie tessili scioperanti finivano in carcere, ma venivano liberate dall’intervento delle donne più ricche di New York. La tragedia delle molte ragazze morte nell’incendio della fabbrica di camicette Triangle, poco dopo la conclusione vincente della loro lotta, è stata il detonatore per la rabbia delle lavoratrici e delle donne in tutto il mondo.
