Mats Berdal è professore di Sicurezza e Sviluppo presso il Dipartimento di Studi sulla Guerra del King’s College di Londra, dove è anche direttore del Conflict, Security and Development Research Programme (CSDRG). Nel 2023 è stato visiting professor onorario presso il Dipartimento di Culture, Politica e Società dell’Università di Torino. Berdal è entrato a far parte del Dipartimento di studi sulla guerra del King’s College di Londra nel 2003, dopo essere stato in precedenza direttore di studi presso l’Istituto internazionale di studi strategici (IISS) di Londra dal 2000 al 2003. È stato professore aggiunto presso il Norwegian Defence University College dal 2006 al 2019 ed è stato Consulting Senior Fellow presso l’IISS dal 2009 al 2011, responsabile del programma Economia e risoluzione dei conflitti dell’istituto. Il professor Berdal ha conseguito la laurea con lode in Relazioni internazionali presso la London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) nel 1988 e il dottorato in Relazioni internazionali presso il St. Antony’s College dell’Università di Oxford nel 1992. È stato eletto membro dell’Academia Europaea nel 2010 ed è associato alla LSE IDEAS.
Berdal ha scritto e tenuto numerose conferenze sui temi della guerra e della pace nell’era moderna. Le sue pubblicazioni includono: Building Peace after War (2009) and the jointly edited volumes Business as Usual? Transnational Organised Crime and International Security (2002); Ending Wars, Consolidating Peace: Economic Perspectives (2010); The Peace in Between: Post-War Violence and Peacebuilding (2011); The Political Economy of Peacebuilding: Power after Peace (2012).
